Open Kitchen Storage

If you have kitchen cabinets that have NO character like mine did, and are not afraid to display your dishes, then this might work for you.  Having mismatched and not so pretty dishes to display can be easily remedied by going to a second hand store to get dishes all in the same color family (they don't all have to be the same dishes ...just similar in color) with VERY little cost to you. I removed the cabinet doors and repainted the whole cabinet a dark brown  (as I did with all of my kitchen cabinets). I, then, painted the sides a complimentary color, and used shelf paper (you can also use wallpaper) that resembled a grass cloth look to back the cabinet.  I love the look and it adds character where there was none. Now, my kitchen is an original. : )
