I ripped up the carpet, removed all of the staples from the wood and covered all of the holes and imperfections with wood putty (and, although the bones and structure of the stairs were decent, there were ALOT of imperfections). Once everything was puttied, I sanded, sanded, and sanded again. Finally, I painted the treads a dark brown and the backs a contrasting white, finishing with 2-3 coats of poly on the treads for protection.
